Albany State University  Announces Change in Men’s Basketball Leadership

After eight seasons leading the program, Patrick Gayle has stepped down as head men’s basketball coach at Albany State Golden Rams, effective immediately.

Albany State’s Director of Athletics issued a statement thanking Gayle for his service:

“We appreciate Coach Gayle’s commitment to Albany State and the time he has invested in our student-athletes over the past eight years. We thank him for his service to the university and wish him well in his next chapter.”

A Tenure Marked by Progress — and Inconsistency

Gayle finished his tenure with an 85–117 overall record and a 62–70 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play.

His signature season came in 2024–25 when the Golden Rams posted an 18–12 overall record and went 13–8 in conference play. Albany State advanced to the SIAC semifinals that year, and the 18 victories marked the program’s highest single-season win total since 2007 — signaling what many believed was momentum building in the program.

However, that momentum proved difficult to sustain. In 2025–26, Albany State finished 12–17 overall and 11–13 in SIAC competition, placing seventh in the SIAC East Division. The Golden Rams were eliminated in the opening round of the conference tournament, falling 76–74 to LeMoyne-Owen College.

Historical Context

Albany State has long competed in the SIAC but has struggled to consistently contend for conference championships in the modern era. The program’s last SIAC Tournament championship appearance came more than a decade ago, in 2007, and sustained postseason success has remained elusive.

Gayle’s tenure represented one of the longer coaching runs in recent program history. His ability to elevate the team to an 18-win season suggested potential for upward trajectory, but the Golden Rams were unable to string together multiple contending seasons.

With a national search set to begin immediately, Albany State now faces a pivotal offseason — one that could define the next era of Golden Rams basketball in an increasingly competitive SIAC landscape.
